Sports Medicine

Regents School of Austin stands out among private schools in Texas by investing in two full-time certified athletic trainers. Our top priority is the health, safety, and wellness of our student-athletes.

With our comprehensive athletic training program and state-of-the-art facilities, we are dedicated to developing stronger athletes and promoting wellness. Our campus features early morning and afternoon gym hours, ensuring that our students have ample opportunities for training and fitness.

Sports Medicine Student Program

What is an athletic trainer?

Athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of emergent, acute or chronic injuries and medical conditions. Athletic trainers are healthcare professionals that work in cohesion with a team physician, physical therapist and others to provide care of athletes.

What is the Sports Medicine student Program?

This is an opportunity to learn the basic skills of an Athletic Trainer while serving Regents athletes. As a Student Athletic Trainer you will be able to serve athletes by assisting Staff Athletic Trainers in the health care of our student athletes. Roles will include stocking supplies in the athletic training room, sanitizing treatment surfaces, making ice bags, and set-up and take down for practices and events. As students start to build their skills they are able to assist in first aid, stretching, and helping athletes with rehabilitation exercises. In addition students are extra “eyes and ears” for the certified athletic trainers.

**Disclaimer**

Understand that your duties may change depending on how busy any given day is. For example, one day you may have more hands-on experience aiding the athletic trainers and other days you will be helping setting up for practices and/or games.

Our goal:

  • Introduce who Athletic Trainers are and what they do.
  • To learn basic hands on skills of athletic training such as: stretching, taping, CPR, first aid, rehab, and nutrition
  • To help prepare for college courses in Kinesiology/Athletic Training
  • Grow one’s communication skills and self confidence
  • Have fun!
what is the Time commitment?

Student athletic trainers will be asked to commit 3 days a week. One day for the learning lab and 2 additional days for practices/games. Game coverage will be additional days and optional. Of course students are encouraged to participate more than the minimum requirement for more experience!

Example of a weekly schedule:

  • Tuesday-Friday: 3:30-6pm [Hands on/practice experience]

Each student will be assigned a day to come after school. This is a time students can serve Regents athletes at practice, observe the athletic trainers when athletes are injured, and they can practice the skills that were taught during lab time.

  • Tuesday-Saturday: 4:00-end of events [Game coverage]

- Games are also opportunities for experience. Games will usually run later than 6pm. Athlete’s will be assigned games on a monthly basis.
- Varsity Football games do not start until 7pm so these will be late nights.
- We will ask you to arrive at least 30 min prior to the start of the game.
- Opportunities to travel with certain sports for away games.

  • Monday-Friday: 12:25-1:10pm [Rehab]

- Possibly our busiest time is during lunch. This is the time where many student athletes come in for rehab or treatment for current injuries. This is a great time to learn and help with rehab exercises, stretching and different treatment modalities.

  • Friday (Fall)/ Monday (Winter/Spring): 4:00-4:30 pm Lab

- If a student can not make a lab for whatever reason, makeup lab times will be discussed depending on the availability of the student and athletic trainer for that week.

When will the season start and end?
  • Fall will start August 5 and will end by the first week of December at the latest.
  • Winter will start Mid October and end in March.
  • Spring will start February 1st and end in May.

Students will be able to choose if they want to participate in fall, winter and spring semesters or just one. When making this decision we highly recommend that they do not participate in sports while in the athletic training program (for time commitment reasons).

What is the participation fee and what is it used for?

Because athletic participation is optional, athletic fees are assessed on a participation basis and not included in tuition. The fee is set each year to cover operational expenses.

Added Bonus!

You will earn a Varsity Letter for helping us serve Regents Athletes after two seasons! This is a great way to be a part of athletics at Regents and boost your resume!
