Exciting, Engaging & Inspiring
Our Curriculum
The heart of the Grammar School curriculum is the traditional "3-Rs - Reading, Writing and ‘Rithmetic." Using those basic tools, other aspects of the curriculum are readily accessible for exploration. Some of those areas include, Bible, history, science, and fine arts appreciation.
Most days begin with Bible, the under-girding for the rest of the day. Students study scripture, memorize scripture, sing scripture, and pray. Some of the most enlightening discussions take place as teachers and students come under the authority of God's Word and character development takes place.
Grammar School curriculum is exciting, engaging, and inspiring. It builds a strong base on which the Schools and Logic and Rhetoric can build.
Subjects
In addition to art, music, PE, and Spanish, our students study the following core subjects:
-
MATHEMATICS
From number recognition and counting, to percentages, fractions, and decimals, students learn to express difficult concepts and understand that math reflects an orderly God.
-
Science
Science experiments range from cloud journaling to work in the Regents Science & Nature Center (link this to the RSNC page, please). Children develop a love of science and an understanding of the scientific method; projects allow practical application.
-
History
In understanding history, we understand the world and ourselves. Living History (link to Living History page, please) means students have opportunities to dress up and experience key historical events.
-
Literature & Language Arts
The foundations of language, including grammar, vocabulary, and spelling are taught alongside reading great literature. All Grammar School classes enjoy Read Aloud time with their teachers, and reading at home is strongly encouraged.
-
Latin
Latin begins in the 5th grade; in addition to learning the language, students study the culture of ancient Rome.
-
Bible & Memory
Most days start with Bible reading and memorization. By the time students leave the 6th grade, they have memorized the entire book of Ephesians (and celebrated with an end of year Ephesians Chapel in which the whole Grammar School participates), as well as other Bible passages in connection to their curriculum.
Living History
We believe good stories and immersive experiences bring history to life and make a lasting impact on our students. High school seniors remember their favorite days in Grammar school as those that involved dressing up. Each grade has at least one feast day, for which students dress in costume and spend the day in activities appropriate to the time period and context. From Ancient Egypt, to medieval monks, to the French Revolution, hands-on learning allows children to understand the past and to develop a deep connection to the material.
